Spartanburg routed Union County 35-0 on Saturday.
UCHS couldn’t get anything going on offense. Spartanburg’s defense allowed
the Jackets just 88 rushing yards, 29 yards through the air, forced two
turnovers that led to touchdowns and blocked a punt that led to another.
Chris Gary had an interception, Kelvin Wilbanks recovered a fumble and Lamar
Young blocked the punt.
The Vikings led 28-0 at halftime.
“They took it to us,” said Jacket coach David Lipsey.
Spartanburg quarterback Cornelius Jones scored three short rushing touchdowns
and threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Daquan Fuller. Jones passed for 91 yards
and rushed for 59.
Markeith Hillstock also had a short rushing touchdown and led the Vikings on the
ground with 61 yards. Fuller had two grabs on the night for 62 yards and Michael
Harpe had three catches for 50 yards.
A highlight for the Jackets was Michael Mebane, who rushed for 59 yards and
caught a pass for 16 yards.
Quarterback Nick Monroe completed two passes for 29 yards, the other to Calvin
Williams. Tate Knox added 23 yards on the ground.
The game was originally scheduled to be played on Friday, but was postponed due
to rain.
Spartanburg (1-1) travels to Northwestern on Friday. UCHS (0-2) gets a week to
regroup with a bye. The Jackets next play at Gaffney on Sept. 11.
